Hostel Review: Backpacker’s Freak Melaka

I stumbled upon this hostel while I was walking around the town of Melaka looking for a cheap place to stay. When I arrived in Melaka, I went straight to Blacksmith road and Jonker street to find a place to stay for the night since I was told that these are the streets where most hostels and guesthouses were located. I walked inside a few guesthouses in the area to check their rooms but most of them were a too expensive for my budget while some were cheap but filthy. My tired feet then decided to take me across the river and into Jalan PM2 where I found Backpacker’s Freak Hostel, a member of International Inn Hotels Group. They have a number of hotels and hostels in Melaka but Backpacker’s Freak was the perfect fit for my 1,000-peso a day budget so I booked the whole floor for 15MYR a night. Kidding, I booked a bunk but no one else was there so I had the whole floor to myself.

Communal Area

Communal Area

The whole floor I stayed in was generally clean. Although there were some post-construction materials laying around in one corner of the floor where the sink is, it didn’t really matter because I don’t need to go to that area often. Other than that, everything was clean and well organized.

Backpacker's Freak Dorm Room

Backpacker’s Freak Dorm Room

I checked two dorm rooms, both of them fan rooms and they were pretty much the same. They both had two double-deck beds. The rooms were big enough for me to move around comfortably and the fan was more than enough to keep the room cool especially because the rooms were in the 3rd floor and you can always leave the window open. And if you do leave it open, you’ll also have a very good view of the Menara Taming Sari.

The sheets were very clean and I think they’re new too so it was really cozy. The only problem I had with the room is that there were only 2 electric outlets and they were on the same side where the fan is, so unless you are on the top bunk near the fan, you won’t have your own outlet to charge your gadgets in. Also, the bunks didn’t have a rubber footing so it gives out a pretty loud screech when you climb up to your bed.

Another detail I couldn’t miss out is that the wifi signal in my room was quite weak and I got disconnected a lot of times. But once I stepped out to the communal area, I had no problem with the connection.

Toilet and Bath

I know, I know, everyone prefers clean toilets over clean rooms. And yes, this hostel had both. The bathrooms were a little small but unless you have plans of getting in the shower with somebody, then the little space should be more than enough for yourself. There were two bathrooms, one has a toilet and the other has a toilet and a shower. The shower also had a heater just in case you want to take a hot bath.

Backpacker's Freak Location

Find the Freak

I personally think this hostel has the perfect location for a number of reasons. It is located right across the Menara Taming Sari viewing tower and the Maritime museum, 2 of Melaka’s most famous attractions and it is just a 3-minute walk from Dataran Pahlawan Mall and Makota Parade, 2 notable shopping centers in the area. About 5 minutes to Jonker Walk more importantly, the bus stop is right across the hostel. If that’s not enough, there are a number cheap and delicious diners in the same block and more importantly a food court in the next block. Now what more could you ask for in terms of location?

There’s a catch though, they don’t have their own reception in the same building so if you need something from the front desk, you’ll have to walk to LB Hotel(their sister hotel) to talk to the receptionist. But don’t worry, it’s only 1 block away.
